Oral argument is concluded in the US Supreme Court. Justice Scalia asserted recognition of same sex marriage is a break from the tradition of heterosexual marriage for a millennia.

Since the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868, the U.S. Constitution codified Equal Protection under the law. It is this guarantee that shields the minority from the tyranny of the majority. And yet, polling across the country indicates the country is ready for same sex marriage.

The majority is ready to extend the protections of marriage to their fellow citizens. Popular culture has successfully challenged our notion of family life by extending the definition to its gay members.

Let’s hope the U.S. Supreme Court is aware that some of the most ardent supporters of gay marriage are heterosexuals who love and respect their fellow citizens.
